7 Places In Your Home You Should Never Forget To Clean

May 20, 2020

When you walk into any room in the house armed with your cleaning tools, it’s easy to spot what needs to be cleaned. There may be spilled food on the kitchen counter, dishes in the sink, dirty laundry on the floor, or soap scum in the bathroom. But, once all these are cleaned and done away with, are you sure your house is truly sparkling clean?

Often times, the dirtiest places in the house are not the most obvious ones. They may not even look particularly dirty. But, these places are the silent dirt gatherers that can affect you and your family’s health. Sometimes, you have to put in that little extra effort to get to these spots to really get a deep clean of your home. So, let’s take a look at each corner of your home and shed light on the places or things you should never forget to clean.

1. Undersides of Furniture

When you go ahead and vacuum up underneath sofas or beds, you’ll surely find tons of dust bunnies and a good layering of dust. However, the floor shouldn’t be the only place you’re looking at. You might be shocked to find what all sorts of dust and dirt cling to bedframes, chair seats, sofa frames, and table braces. Take your vacuum or dusting wand and make sure to give these areas some good huffing a few times a year.

2. Tops of Cabinets, Doors, and Light Fixtures

Given that these places are often out of our reach, they’re prime spots for the dust to gather. So, take your duster or a piece of cloth tied to the end of your broom and make sure to routinely clean the top of door frames, cabinets, and ceiling corners. Make sure to also get around to your light fixtures, ceiling fans, and lamps.

3. Closet Floors

A closet cleanout is a normal part of many people’s cleaning routines. With all the stuff that gets tossed around in there, that’s understandable. But, what about the closet itself? When was the last time you gave the home of your clothes, bags, and shoes a good deep clean? Closet floors can easily get dusty and dirty from all the dust and dirt from your clothes and shoes. If it’s carpeted, it becomes a breeding ground of mold and mildew. To avoid this, make time to pull everything out of your closet and give it a good deep clean seasonally at least. You can also do this in time when you’re weeding out your clothes.

4. Walls and Baseboards

If you look closely at your walls, you might be amazed to find just how much dust collect on the vertical surfaces of your home. So, take your duster and start working from top to bottom to clean out your walls. Don’t forget to pay attention to your baseboards. Swipe a finger on top of these and you’ll probably find a good streak of dust on them. In rooms with more moisture, try wiping these down with a moist cloth since the moisture tends to solidify the dust into soil that hardens on the surface.

Upholstery on Furniture

Given that we spend a lot of time on our couches and the like, it’s clear that the upholstery of our furniture is a hotspot for all kinds of dirt and bacteria. These fabrics are exposed to soil, pet hair, unwashed hands, dust, sneezes, and the like all day long. That’s why upholstered surfaces should be vacuumed at least weekly. Make sure to get into corners and underneath cushions where food scraps, hair, and other things can slip into. Then, finish it all up with a disinfecting spray. If possible, make time to wash your seat and cushion covers every few months.

6. Gadgets

Think about all the hands that touch the remotes, keyboards, headphones, earphones, tablets, phones, and the like in your home. Are you sure they’re all clean? With that, all these things should be wiped down with a disinfectant at least daily. If someone is sick, it should be wiped down after each use. Oh and don’t forget to also wipe down commonly touched areas like light switches, doorknobs, and the like. The same goes for things you handle every day like your keys, wallets, or purses..

7. Vacuum Cleaners and Cleaning Tools

It may seem a little overkill to also clean your cleaning tools, but if you think about it, you need to. If your cleaning tools are dirty, each time you’re cleaning you’re just spreading around more dirt. All mop heads, sponges, and scrubbing brushes should be cleaned with disinfectants and hot water every after use. And the cup in your vacuum cleaner should also be cleaned thoroughly every month or so. You might also need to clean out some filters as well.
