7 Tips to Create a De-Stress Zone at Home

July 8, 2020

A few months back, any part of the home could have been a de-stress zone as long as it was home. But now that we’ve crammed almost all our daily activities from exercising, working, going to class, and doing our personal hobbies in our homes, we might need to find or create a new space that’s solely dedicated to releasing all the day’s stresses.

Whether it’s a spare bedroom or a spot by the window, a de-stressing space can work wonders for your productivity (and your sanity). With this, we might not hate being stuck inside as much as we’d imagine. If you’re interested in carving out that little de-stressing nook for yourself, here are some tips to help you out.

Keep It Minimal

When you think of comfort spaces, you’d imagine a relaxing space to sit in or lie down. But aside from the lounge chair, cushions, pillows, blankets, and a few other helpful trinkets, any good relaxation space shouldn’t be crowded with much else. As a lot of designers say, a cluttered space clutters the mind.

Try thinking of a hotel room with its fresh linens and tidy beds. One is instantly relaxed at the sight. So consider opting for a simple cozy chair or cushion and a collection of pillows to anchor your space. Remember to avoid anything that can steal the focus from your relaxation period at the end of the day.

Make Your Space Yours

Everybody has their own way to destress. Some love to meditate. Others love to exercise. A few more love to cuddle up with a good book. Each hobby or each process needs a different environment. So when creating your de-stress zone, think of what relaxes you most and design your space accordingly. You don’t need to go with the trends or what you see on Pinterest since your de-stress zone is probably one of the most personal spaces in your home where you can simply melt into yourself. Then again, remember to only have the essentials and keep the distractions away.

Opt for a Secluded Space

Your living room can easily become a de-stress zone as much as your bedroom. But a secluded place has a certain magic that you won’t be able to get in highly trafficked areas. The best part is that you won’t even need a huge and spacious house to find one. It can as easily be the corner by the window or that odd spot in your bedroom. As long as you have a certain degree of privacy, you’re set. The whole idea is having a space that’s yours. It’s always ready to be enjoyed and whenever you enter, you immediately feel the stress melting away.

Choose a Spot with Fresh Air or Natural Light

Oftentimes, people simply forget just how relaxing a good breath of air or a nice patch of sunlight is. Even if you can’t go outside, it’s nice to have a spot in the house with any of these two. Spending a good few minutes with these and maybe a cup of coffee or tea can help you clear your mind and process what happened in the day.

Stimulate the Senses

When it comes to relaxation and de-stressing, it’s best to engage multiple senses. Consider soothing sights like warm white walls, the greenery outside, or even the shifting colors of the sky. Then try incorporating soft, cozy, natural materials in your space. You can also add sound considerations that block out everyday noises especially if you live in a particularly rowdy neighborhood. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to add in some little touches like a candle here or some scents there to truly help you slip into your most relaxed state.

Keep Your View Tidy

If you’re staring at a littered couch or a messy living room, it doesn’t do much for relaxation. It’s simply another distraction that’ll cloud your mind with worry or any negative emotion that the mess can bring. Instead of letting your mind settle down from overworking the whole day, you’ll be thinking when you’ll be doing the laundry or why you didn’t do it earlier in the first place. So make sure to keep your de-stress zone and its surroundings free of clutter.

Connect with Nature

It’s simply a fact. Nature has magical powers when it comes to relaxing the mind and the body. While the outside isn’t much of an option right now with the pandemic, a good view of nature can make a mental difference. If a scenic view also isn’t an option, indoor plants or even faux plants and images of nature can boost your de-stress zone’s calming vibe.
