9 Things That Can Make Your Apartment Look Cheap
September 2, 2020Decorating your apartment is fun, exciting, and fulfilling. Sometimes though, we can over decorate or buy too many things to fill up the house. Other times, we may cut too many corners. And oftentimes, these all end up as anything but beautiful.
What we often forget is that there’s a certain balance to decorating and no matter our budget, we have only one goal: to add beauty to our home and to create a pleasing space that we can be proud of. Fortunately, with decorating, you can beautify your home with a few simple tricks and by avoiding some decorating mistakes. Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out what to avoid.
Cluttered Rooms
It’s not so much as decorating but preparing the base of your home. Before you can start adding on decor, it’s better to have a clean and organized canvas. Leaving clutter around even with beautiful decor around you would only make your home look unkempt and well, cheap. Working on that decluttered look, however, can already make your home look nice, modern, and expensive.
Wrong Lighting
Much like how lighting can change everything in a photo, lighting can also affect so much of the look and feel of your home. Imagine yellowish lighting in your already small and cramped bathroom or too bright a light in your bedroom. It doesn’t feel right and oftentimes, it can feel tacky. While choosing your lighting, make sure that they’re right for your space. For rooms like the living room, three or more sources of light are great to create a relaxing ambiance.
Overdone Themes
As much as we love something, there is such a thing as too much. And when it comes to themes, there is definitely a fine line between great and theme vomit. In fact, instead of decorating with a theme, why not decorate with a style? It’s a different approach that gives you more freedom to express yourself and what you love and still be able to create a home that doesn’t look cheap at all. So instead of filling your home with too much of that good thing, try expressing your love by subtle expressions of style.
Cutesy Little Decor
There’s nothing wrong with those tokenish decors. In fact, some unique and fantastic cutesy decor can even be great conversation starters. But too many miniature figurines or cliche quotes can make a home look a little dated and unsophisticated. Keep a few of your favorites but as for the rest, store them away and go for something that really speaks to your personality.
Furniture Sets
Furniture sets are great in some instances. But they don’t necessarily always complement the room. Since these things are pre-made without any consideration to the size of your home, the existing furniture there, and such, they can often make the room look like an afterthought. Try to mix and match various styles instead to give more personality to your home. It might even help you save a little more. A good tip to follow is to simply pick one or two things from one shop to avoid making your home look like it came straight out of a catalog magazine.
Basic Light Fixtures
They’re functional but let’s admit it, they often look shabby. You can easily swap these out for more modern ones that match your decor. Trust us, just this one little change can transform an outdated looking room to an aesthetically pleasing space.
Rugs that are Too Smalls
When choosing rugs, a lot of us only pay attention to the design, pattern, texture, and price. But one thing we should also pay attention to when picking out our rugs is the size. You should make sure that they’re large enough to fit right under your furniture or that their size is just enough for the space. This way, their ends won’t just be awkwardly floating out and be a risk for tripping over.
Mass Produced Art
The thing with purchasing art for your decor is that it’s meant to be purposeful and a true expression of the kind of person living in that home. That’s why when it comes to choosing art, mass-produced art is one thing to avoid. Yes, it might look cute at first glance but would you really want a piece of art that’s no different than everybody else’s and would make your home look like a generic cutout of theirs?
We all know that art can be expensive. But even if you can’t afford those big luxury artworks, there are still ways for you to have your own original artwork. Etsy is a good place to start and you can even DIY your own thing.
Empty Walls
There is a place and time for empty walls. Sometimes though, they look like bleak and wasted spaces. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to dress up a wall. You can put a gallery wall, hang up a great piece of art, or even paint it. Just make sure to keep it simple and not to overdo it.
