8 Ways To Transform Your Small Balcony Into An Outdoor Oasis

July 31, 2020

Walking out to a wide, open balcony, welcoming the morning sun or its last rays in the evening while enjoying a calm and beautiful view is a dream to many. So are the barbecue nights, outdoor dinners, or maybe even some reunion parties. Unfortunately, those kinds of balconies, the ones with great space and great views, are scarce in many cities. Even a modest terrace is considered a luxury. But, honestly, so what?

Even if you only have a little slab of concrete with less than mediocre views, you still have a balcony to call yours. With a little bit of creative thinking, you can flip that barren spot into an outdoor oasis that can bring you some joy as you hunker down with the rest of the world to wait out this pandemic. Here are some ideas that you can draw inspiration from.

1. Garden Balcony

Plants have become a staple indoor decoration. But why not bring them outdoors and create your very own mini garden balcony? You can grow your own herbs, flowers, succulents, and whatnot. And even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can use faux plants and flowers to fill the space. These can beautify any balcony and even give you a little bit more balcony privacy.

2. Floor It

Some balcony floors can either be hideous, disgusting, or just plain boring. But there is yet a way to save your balcony through vinyl tiles or interlocking deck tiles. Not only will you beautify those boring floors but you’ll also be able to avoid the ire of your landlord. They’re also very easy to install and very easy to disassemble. And you can find these in stores like IKEA, LOWES, Home Depot, and even online for a good price.

Another way you can cover up those floors is to give it a picnic dressing. Lay out some weather-resistant fabrics or blankets, a couple of cushions, and some outdoor seats and you’re good. If you don’t have enough room for outdoor furniture, this would be one of the best setups. And you’ll easily be able to cover up those floors and create an eclectic look for your small balcony.

3. Outdoor Dining

It may be dangerous to dine out right now but you can somehow recreate the experience and spice up your dinners by turning your balcony into an outdoor dining area. An outdoor countertop or a small outdoor table plus some bar stools would be perfect even for a 100-square foot balcony.

4. Faux Camping

Most apartment buildings won’t allow you to light up an actual campfire on your balcony. Nevertheless, you can recreate that cozy campfire feeling with a bundle of decorative firewood and some string lights. Simply pile up your logs on top of each other like you’re building a fire and wrap it up with your string lights. It might not be as warm as actual campfire but it’ll make you feel like you’re somewhere nice and toasty anyway.

5. Summer Patterns

Who says you need a cushy poolside seat or beachside view to enjoy the summer sun? Just layer a couple of patterned rugs and plush cushions on your balcony to make it just the spot to hang out and soak up the summer sun. You can use a mix of bold patterns and textures or try to recreate a cooling effect with light fabrics and colors.

6. Love the Hammocks

Anyone who’s ever had a great summer nap on a hammock would tell you that it is absolutely one of the best comforts of life. So if you have just the right places to hang up a hammock, why not join the rest of us who’d love to sit there and just snooze away the afternoon? You can even set up an outdoor umbrella nearby to protect you from the direct rays of the sun.

7. Fairy Tail Curtains

Light and airy curtains add drama and privacy to a small balcony unlike any other. Add in a couple of string lights or lanterns and you’ve got yourself quite the romantic oasis. Using wall-mounted curtain rods would help keep your curtains from flying away.

8. Romantic Lights

If you want a romantic mood, candles are on the top of the list. But solar lights can do just as well and cast the same magical glow. With these, you won’t have to worry about a sudden gust of wind blowing them out of anything like that. Plus, they’re much less of a fire hazard. On the other hand, you can also get yourself some candle lanterns to give your balcony a bit of a 19th-century flair.
