How To Create Your Gallery Wall
October 29, 2020It’s hard not to love gallery walls when they’re the most straightforward way of artistic expression that can fit most home decor styles that you can bring into your home. It doesn’t only fill in an empty space, it gives it life. Gallery walls allow you to literally splash your walls with character and infuse your space with color and stories. Who wouldn’t love that?
With all the gallery walls we’ve been seeing everywhere though, it’s easy to be overwhelmed or to feel doubt you’d be able to create something truly unique to you. What you have to remember though is that gallery walls allow for endless possibilities. You can hang up pictures, art, or even items. Those are what make your gallery wall unique to you: your taste and your preferences. If you’re having trouble hanging up that first frame though, here is a little guide in creating that gallery wall you’ve always wanted.
1. Fill your Staircase Walls
It’s easy to leave staircase walls empty. After all, we don’t exactly hang out on the steps, do we? However, it’s actually one of the prime spots for a fun gallery wall. You can make the most out of all item sizes with ease and you won’t have to think so seriously of focal points or anything like that.
The best way to go about this is to stagger the frames parallel to the steps. Use the railing as your lower guide and it’ll look put together no matter how you put it up there. You can make the mix a little more unique by adding in custom pieces or mixing up pictures or art with handcrafted items and the like. Since it is a high-traffic area, it’s best you secure your items with adhesive strips to make them a little more secure from everyday bumps.
2. Try an Eclectic Arrangement
Sometimes, sticking to one theme is a little too boring. Fortunately, gallery walls are built to accommodate anything. By anything, we mean any mix of ideas, style, or taste that you desire. You’ll simply need a strong focal point and some patience. Hang up an anchor piece and from there, build out, mixing and matching your items. You can choose to have a unifying principle or you can try to wing it and see what works best in your eyes.
To give your assortment a little bit more dimension, try mixing and matching curved and edgy elements. Aside from the images or art themselves, you can also do this by looking for unique frames.
3. Keep it Simple with a Grid Arrangement
A grid gallery wall is perfect for featuring a bunch of photos or art equally. This format invites people to have a closer look and give equal attention to each and every frame. That’s why people love hanging up family photos or some of their most treasured photos this way. Unlike other gallery wall styles as well, this fills a wall without looking too busy.
Pro-tip, if you want to create a more unified look, try going with a black and white or one color scheme. And if you’re placing it over a piece of furniture, make sure that the arrangement occupies at least two-thirds its width to create a pleasing balance.
4. Use a Ledge
Gallery walls don’t always have to be hung up. You can also use ledges to rest your photos or art on. This style allows you to make an interesting arrangement while skipping drilling multiple holes on the wall. You might need a lot more trial and error with this one though to find the right mix for you. Generally though, the best recommendation is to layer only two frames deep with your focal point at eye level. You can also opt to tie everything together with a color palette.
