Originally named Nickelville, the town was renamed Wylie in 1887 in honor of Colonel W.D. Wylie, a right-of-way agent for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. Geographically, it is bordered by Sachse to the south, Murphy to the west, and is surrounded by Lake Lavon to the north and east.
